Embracing Your Mom Bod: Untangling Unhealthy Summer Body Pressures

postpartum Jul 29, 2024

The countdown to summer is on, which means the pressure to attain that elusive "hot mom summer bod" is about to kick into high gear. Raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimized by the onslaught of weight loss supplement ads and promises of "getting your pre-baby body back" as soon as the temperatures rise.

I hear you, mama. As a mom myself, I know those pressures and insecurities all too well. Maybe you're feeling uncomfortable squeezing your postpartum body into shorts or swimsuits. Or perhaps you deeply want to feel confident and energized, but aren't sure how to get there in a healthy, sustainable way.

In this post, I'm getting candid about my own struggles with body image since becoming a mom. I'll share the mindset shifts that have been game-changers, along with the practical lifestyle habits I lean on to feel my best while prioritizing mental and physical health.

Because you deserve to embrace your unique mom bod this summer, free of harsh restrictions or self-judgment!

The Reality of Body "Flawsomeness" After Baby

Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: despite what airbrushed Instagram models might suggest, very few women effortlessly "bounce back" to their pre-baby body. Your body has gone through the miracle of creating, carrying, and birthing new life. That's MAJOR, and it leaves a permanent imprint.

Excess skin, stretch marks, wider hips, changed breast shape and size - all of these shifts are natural after delivering your bundle of joy. And you know what? That's okay! These aren't flaws at all, but reminders of the incredible life-giving abilities of your mom's body.

Of course, that doesn't make it easy to look in the mirror and love every new curve or imperfection right away. I've been there, struggling to embrace my postpartum body and all its changes. That's totally normal and valid!

Ditch the "Bikini Body" Mindset

Where we often get into trouble is buying into the societal belief that we need to attain a certain standard of beauty or an arbitrary pant size by a deadline in order to happily wear a swimsuit. News flash: that mindset is bogus and only breeds more dissatisfaction!

Maybe you've gone down that rabbit hole before, jumping from one unsustainable diet to the next in pursuit of results. Totally understandable, but so misguided in hindsight! Overly-restrictive dieting tanks our metabolism crushes our energy levels, and often leads to rebound weight gain plus a damaged relationship with food and our bodies.

Instead, I propose we ditch that tired "bikini body" narrative and take a more holistic, big-picture approach - one centered around self-compassion, sustainable habits, and celebrating the amazing feats our mom-bods are capable of.

Your New Summer Body Affirmation

Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Focus on the rise and fall of your belly as you inhale and exhale. Now repeat after me:

"My body is worthy, capable, and beautiful exactly as it is right now. It has brought new life into this world and for that, I am in awe. While I may desire some changes, I refuse to punish or shame my body into compliance. Instead, I will treat it with deep respect, nourishing it through gentle habits that honor my unique needs as a mother. My worth is not defined by my dress size or shape, but by how I show up for myself and my loved ones each day. This summer, I embrace my mom bod without hesitation or apologies."

Let that sink in for a moment. Reread it if needed. This is the kind of inner dialogue and radical self-acceptance we all deserve to cultivate, mama!

The Sustainable Path to Body Confidence

With that empowered mindset as our north star, let's talk about practical strategies for feeling our best while ditching unsustainable tactics. A huge piece of the puzzle? Tuning into your body's unique hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues.

So many new moms fall into the trap of restrictive dieting after a baby, thinking deprivation is the fastest route to results. But this raises cortisol levels, slows your metabolism, primes you for intense cravings, and can even contribute to issues like low milk supply if breastfeeding.

Instead of cutting calories, I recommend focusing on nutrient density. Load up on satiating protein, fiber-rich fruits and veggies, and healthy fats while aligning your intake to your body's natural hunger signals. Meeting your biological needs helps regulate blood sugar and hormone levels for stable energy.

When it comes to movement, the name of the game is to find joyful activities that feel invigorating rather than draining. Maybe that's following a strength training program to build metabolism-boosting muscle tissue. Or simply committing to a daily walk while basking in the mood-boosting benefits of fresh air and vitamin D.

Don't neglect self-care practices like meditation, breathwork, and other stress-management tools too. Chronic stress makes it infinitely harder for our bodies to find equilibrium.

Be Patient and Ditch Rigid Deadlines

Above all, it's crucial to ditch those rigid deadlines and aggressive timelines we tend to set. You know, the "I need to lose the baby weight by Summer" or "I'll be back in my pre-pregnancy jeans in 6 weeks" kind of mentalities. Setting ourselves up for disappointment is utterly counterproductive!

Our bodies require time and grace as we navigate the postpartum hormonal roller coaster and adapt to our new realities as moms. Healing and establishing a new set point takes months, if not years, especially if we've been through the wringer of pregnancy complications, invasive births, etc.

The better policy? Adopt a long-term mindset, celebrate every healthy habit you're able to stack and avoid ruthlessly comparing your progress to others or your past self. Your journey is yours alone, so own it!

Find Outfit Favorites That Flatter Your Current Body

Speaking of comparing ourselves to others, one major trigger can be seeing other moms who seem to "have it all together" rocking crop tops and skimpy bikinis all summer long. Maybe that fills you with style envy, or perhaps you think, "I could never pull that off with my current body."

Here's my hot take: you absolutely can rock a swimsuit or cute warm-weather outfit, but it's all about discovering what makes YOU feel confident and comfortable based on your unique proportions and preferences right now.

For instance, I'm super self-conscious about my spider veins and love the way a long maxi dress fits my body (and it's so comfortable). So that's become part of my signature summer outfit! You may prefer a swimsuit with ruching or contouring details to smooth and flatter your curves. Or a classic one-piece that offers more coverage and are so stylish!

The point is, do some playful experimenting to find YOUR most confidence-boosting looks for this season. And have grace for yourself if that process takes time or if your vibe shifts by next summer. Our bodies are constantly evolving, so our wardrobes should too!

At the end of the day, the greatest gift we can give ourselves is body acceptance - embracing our wonderful, remarkable mom-bods exactly as they are right now while aligning our actions with sustainable habits that raise our vitality and confidence.

So toss those outdated, unhealthy "summer body" rules to the side this year. The true "hot mom summer" energy is about being radically body-positive while caring for yourself in a way that uplifts your whole being. You've so got this, mama!

Hey mama,

I'm Brooke Miller,

Before becoming a mom, I chronically dieted & thought "eat less, move more" was the healthiest option. I dealt with exhaustion, mood swings, hormone imbalances (not getting a regular cycle), high cholesterol and weight cycling. I felt like something was wrong with me.

Before I got pregnant with my first son, I discovered the balanced nutrition approach I teach inside The Postpartum Shift. Once I implemented the framework, I was energized, gained strength, got my period back, lowered my cholesterol & maintained my healthiest weight. I continued this during my pregnancies & postpartum periods and recovered quickly after birth, made more than enough milk for my babies, had energy (even with the sleep deprivation) & stable mood. Postpartum was really enjoyable.

With a decade of experience as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Lactation Counselor, I created The Postpartum Shift to help moms boost energy, mood, metabolism & milk supply to have a stress-free & enjoyable postpartum experience.
